The "Luepold Boys"

Mad River Glen certainly attracts a loyal lot of skiers, some may even be considered a bit fanatical. There is one group of skiers, according to an informal discussion among MRG employees, that is just a tad more into it than the rest. Sure there are plenty of hard cores that get their 200 days a year, but these guys all have "real jobs" (and wives, believe it or not!!!) and have to trek from 3 to 6 hours to get up to the mountain. They are known as the "Luepold Boys".

Led by brothers, Bob and Dave, from Lunenberg, Massachusetts, this "committed" group skis long weekends at Mad River throughout the season. They and their good friends have permanent reservations at The Hyde Away on Route 17, continuing the long standing relationship between the inn and the mountain that began in 1948. Several of them also have a place up on The Practice Slope. The group includes Juan Darias, the finest skier ever from the Canary Islands and his good friend and co-worker Gary Berg who is often mistaken as Juan’s look-a-like. Gary’s biggest accomplishment in 97-98 was his unintentional nose piercing out in the 20th Hole. Bob Fasset, the lone New Jersey member, Paul Allain, Glenn Kornachuck and Edson Kaarela round out the group.

The Luepold’s began skiing with their family at Stowe in 1956 and eventually gravitated over to Mad River and have skied here exclusively for the past twelve years. They and their friends have hosted visiting ski writers, volunteered for numerous clean-up days, helped out after the ice storm and have been one of the Co-op’s biggest supporters. If you ever noticed the rescue sled hanging in the tree on top of the 20th Hole, these guys are responsible for its placement. It has been said that, the people, not just the mountain, that make Mad River Glen special. These guys are definitely some of the folks who make Mad River the special place that it is.
