What is The Mad River Glen Cooperative

Background

Mad River Glen first cranked up its now famous Single Chair in 1947. Roland Palmedo, the founder, envisioned a ski area where sport not profit would be the overriding concern. Roland believed that;

" ...a ski area is not just a place of business, a mountain amusement park, as it were. Instead it is a winter community whose members, both skiers and area personnel, are dedicated to the enjoyment of the sport."

Truxton Pratt purchased Mad River in 1972 and his wife Betsy took over the mountain upon his death in 1975 and worked hard to maintain Roland's vision. When Betsy decided to sell her ski area she sold it to the only people she felt she could trust, Mad River Glen's skiers.

On December 5, 1995 Mad River Glen began a new era when the Mad River Glen Cooperative was formed. Mad River is now the only cooperatively owned ski area in America. In an age when the ski industry is consolidating and becoming homogenized, Mad River Glen is bucking the trend by remaining independent and preserving a ski experience that exists nowhere else.

What is the Cooperative

Shareholders in the Mad River Glen Cooperative have come together to fulfill the mission statement.

"...to preserve and protect the forests and mountain ecosystem of General Stark Mountain in order to provide skiing and other recreational access and to maintain the unique character of the area for present and future generations."

The mountain is managed by the hired staff with direction and leadership provided by the Board of Trustees.

Shareholders enjoy discounts on season passes and day tickets and four-share holders can buy transferable passes.

Here's The Deal

A share of the Mad River Glen Cooperative costs $1,500. Shares may be purchased with a single payment or in 30 monthly installments of $50 with a $150 down payment.(Total cost for the installment plan is $1,650, 8.33% APR). The installment option enables everyone who loves and appreciates Mad river to get involved. Shareholder's are obliged to make an Annual Pre-purchase of $200 per season. This advanced purchase requirement(APR) can be applied to nearly any product or service available on the mountain, including season passes, day tickets, food and bar purchases. For most skiers the APR is money you would have spent anyway. The APR is vital as it gives the Co-op necessary cash reserves to provide a cushion for the lean years.

Preservation Certificates are available to organizations and individuals who share the goals of the Co-op but do not use the skiing facilities. They are a great way to support the Co-op's mission without the obligations of share ownership. Certificates can be purchased in $500 increments, with a recommended $1,500 level of participation. Holders of Preservation Certificates may converted to full shares status at any time.
